Praetorian Blood Axe Kommandos?

Greetings everyone!

I've been hinting for sometime that I'v been working on something a little different for my army, something a little greener... well without further ado... a Blood Axe Kommando!

Now before you call the Inquisition on me hear me out. Back when the Praetorians came out, part of the story of Big Toof river was that the badly led Imperial Guard had ignored the intelligence of their highly paid mercenary blood axe kommandos. In doing so they walked right into a trap fully believing the settlement to be lightly garrisoned. As you all know it did not end well for the Imperial Guard and led to Glazers Creek where the remnants of the 24th where holed up maintaining supply lines.

Anyway, I've always loved the idea that the Blood Axes could be bribed to turn against their fellow greenskins. How far you trust their intelligence is another matter entirely. This inspired me to build a unit of kommandos to fight with my guard, either as proxies for something or simply as orks in bigger apocalypse style games where their sneaky skullduggery can be woven into the story.

Anyway enough guff about the fluff, let's talk models. This guy is one of Kromlech's fantastic Afrika Korp models. They have tonnes of character and with the uniforms I thought they would fit in a treat with my Praetorians.

This model was a lot of fun to paint and was also very straightforward. I actually painted him in parts, with the torso and legs glues together and then the arms and head separate. It was a pain when it came time to assemble him as I had to greenstuff the gaps on the arms, but it was worth it for ease of paint job.

The green for the skin is the GW method they demonstrate in their instructional video with an extra light highlight from me to make it that little better. The eyes are worked up to pure yellow in the centre too to give them a little extra interest.

The white webbing is the same as my regular guardsmen as is the uniform colour. I've changed the shorts to grey to add an extra colour or else I though it would end up far to mono colour. The gun itself is just plain silver as I was at a loss what to do with it!

Here we see the ork next to some of the Life Guards for a comparison of size and to see how the colours go together

This ork is pretty massive in comparison to the guardsman, just as it should be. I know orks are meant to be on the same size bases but I fancied they would look better on the new Space Marine bases and I think I prefer them on the bigger size.

Here we see the ork staring down the barrel of a Life Guard's flamethrower. You will see the vein on the ork arm which is painted with a slight blue hue

So there you have it, the first of a unit of 10 sneaky Blood Axes to add to the Praetorian IV.

I'd really love some feedback on this guy before I paint the best. In particular the following - the weapon, can I leave it just metal? I it needs another colour, what? What do you think of the skin, does it need to be darkeror different in another way? Does the model need more colour?

Any feedback whatsoever would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers!

Finished Praetorian Life Guards

Greetings all!

A quick post with a few photos of some newly painted models that have been long on the workbench!

Finally, about 3 to 4 years after the first 5 were finished, I have finally painted the second half of the Life Guards squad! Huzzah!

No longer will I be forced to field a unit of 5 storm troopers to no effect whatsoever. I can now field a full squad of 10 to no effect whatsoever! Double Huzzah!

Anyway, lets take a look...

Photos aren't great (apologies for that), but here we see the whole squad on my painting table (chest of drawers). I really enjoyed some aspects of painting these fellas and I'm really pleased that they match the originals with little variance.

The three in the foreground are newbies. Painting these guys assemble with the arms in place was a massive pain. I think I'm going to start doing a little more painting of disassembled models. I'm reminded of the Highland Scions who are in need of paint and the thought of trying to get in to the detail is not filling me with joy!

I love the expressions on these guys. Victoria Lamb Praetorian heads are utterly brilliant. Bags of character in every model.

One final picture with a close up of this kneeling fella. I'm so pleased to get these done.

I'm now working on an as yet unseen and announced sneaky unit... I'm having to work out how to paint green...

Finally, there is blog you should all definitely check out if you don't already do so, Tale of Painters. I've followed it for years and have a link in my page banners. It is full of tutorials and the work of some inspirational painters and well worth a look. I also might add there is a fine Praetorian gentleman that has recently began contributing...

Cheers!

Reinforcements for the Badab War

As I mentioned last week I went a bit shopping crazy and bought a load of tanks. Well, those tanks are just about finished (1 done the other need insignia and final weathering colour), in addition a squad of 10 guardsmen is coming along nicely, the Commissar is progressing and the storm troopers have also been started. Here are some photos of the works in progress...

The Praetorian Life Guards with their new Chimera (finished and ready to roll)

It's looking increasingly likely that a unit of 5 will be all I can manage for the Badab War. It'll be a shame to field 10 but I just don't think there will be the time! (The others are yet to be built)

A Deathstrike! Overkill or genius... Either way I'm looking forward to my opponents face...
(Tank needs insignia and metal on the weathering, I haven't really started on the missile yet, it'll mainly be white with red fins)

A Banewolf which will likely be in a squadron with the hellhound. (Once again insignia and metal weathering to go)

An executioner, primarily because it costs loads of points and I'm short! (insignia and weathering to go)

Another squad for the platoon, not sure how many guardsman I'm really going to have time to paint but I'd really like and other 20 in the army. Which I might then have to get chimeras for...

The Lord Commissar. Lots to do on him and I cant wait to paint him!

At the moment if all of the above is painted in time I will have about 2350 which means I will still be another 150pts short... Hmmm what to add next...

Radio Silence Over!

Greetings everyone

Apologies for the prolonged radio silence and utter lack of blogging. The past two months have been rather all over the place with a new job and a relocation to London, consequently it's only now that I'm finding myself in the same place as my miniatures with time (still a bit limited but there is some at least!) to get some hobbying done!

Incidently I am now in London and have very little idea about places to game or other hobbyists about so if you have some good local knowledge feel free to let me know.

Right on to the miniature talk!

So time has well and truely flown, as a result I have only 42 days till the 4th Mechanised Infantry need to be ready for the Badab War pt2 up at Warhammer World. The next 42 days worth of blogs will be devoted to getting the boys bristol fashion before the off. So what is to be done...

I wrote a 2500pts list a couple of months ago to get an idea of what needs to be completed. Everything that is finished is currently in the gallery and is featuring in the army, here is what is to be done and at what stage it is.

Lord Commissar - in bits

10 storm troopers - in bits

Leman Russ Executioner - on a shelf in a GW

3x10 guardsmen - undercoated

company section - undercoated

10 highland vets -  various stages of painting

Vendetta - currently wondering whether to get a new one or try to alter my existing red and black inquisitorial one (see battle reports for pictures)

So to recap we are talking a tank a plane and 56 infantry with plenty of greenstuff needing to be done.

So......... Am I mad or might I just pull this off?

No time like the present here is the WIP Commissar Lord

Apologies for making you all crook your neck, I can't get the photo to sit the right way up! The commissar lost his hat as it wasn't regulation. There will be green stuff work on the plasma pistol, helmet, collar, epaulettes and his left arm will wield a powerfist. Does anyone have any ideas what power first could work well? Also black. Do I paint his uniform black?? Im still thinking a standard colour helmet if I do.
Please tell me your thoughts.

Also to illustrate what I mean by bits here you go...

Its going to be a hell of a ride...

As ever I appreciate your comments and would love to hear what you all think.

Also if anyone is going to Badab war or you know anyone drop me a line!

Finished Praetorian Storm trooper!

Despite having a dozen other things on the painting table (particularly the veterans which need to be done after a lot of delays!) the storm trooper which I converted yesterday captured my paintbrush and forced me to sit down until he was finished.

He is the first of what will be a squad of 10 (luckily for me I got 11 in the post so he is just a tester should I wish to change things!), as it is the DKOK grenadier squad there will be a flamer and a grenade launcher (which might be converted as I'd rather a hellgun...).

Any comments very welcome!

Praetorian Storm trooper WIP

Managed to get some greenstuff onto the tester model and heres what it looks like.

When it is properly cured I will neaten it up a bit and get all the greenstuff edges nice and sharp. The helmet crest is pretty basic at the moment and something may well get added to it, but so far I'm pretty pleased with it!

Mid February update

It's come to mid February and unfortunately a rather slow period in terms of hobbying is upon me. Changing job and moving house at the same time means that progress is likely to be very slow in the coming weeks, nonetheless I will try my best and put up a few posts here and there. Earlier today (just scroll down!) I posted some photos of the finished Command HQ Chimera and Salamander, these were painted last week but I haven't had the opportunity to photo them or post about them, I'm really pleased with both of them and it brings my finished tanks total up to 10, I officially don't own an unpainted tank! Huzzah! Now I just need to buy a stormlord to remedy that...

On a side note does anyone know a)if a salamander can be used in a regular IG codex army
                                                       b) what force organisation slot does it use
I like using it because it looks ace, the problem is I suspect it probably isn't legal in my army... Please help!

Those of you that regularly follow Praetorian blogs will have seen Col Gravis taking the plunge and deciding to paint a mind numbingly large number of pith helmeted buggers, well I feel that the time has also come for me to paint some infantry. My 40k games thus far have been me taking every painted model in the army in a bid to make the points up without any real tactical thought, my lack of infantry (a paltry 35ish painted) has made my army very inflexible and my deployment zones more of a parking lot than I would like.

So what am I going to paint?
Firstly the 10 Highland vets. need to be finished, upon their completion that will be 1850pts (of legal army) fully painted
3 x10 man guard squads (2 lascannon and 1 missile launcher heavy weapons which could form a heavy unit if needed), these need to be undercoated.
10 storm troopers, now you may have seen my 'commando' storm troopers that Ive been working on, but these aren't them. This squad will be converted DKOK grenadiers and the first one is built and ready for greenstuff, feast your eyes on this guy...

Epaulets will be sculpted, also filling around the arms and neck. I'm also toying with adding something to the helmet, not sure yet, any ideas?

So in total that is 50 guys that need painting (also a fair bit of converting and sculpting for the stormtroopers), it could take a while...

Speaking of painting, I have been thinking of evolving my methods a bit and getting an airbrush. Now I have absolutely not experience with airbrushes but I'm thinking that if I can paint the khaki uniform on them all with an airbrush it will save me literally days worth of time. I'm going to investigate the matter further but peoples thoughts/experiences would be very gratefully received! Also do you think I could get a result with the airbrush that would match my hand painted ones (regarding the khaki uniform).

On a final note my guardsmen are confirmed for Badab War pt 2 up at Warhammer World in May, I cant wait! If any other Praetorian players are thinking of going let me know and we could team up for the apocalypse game!

That's enough for now, I will catch you all later.

WIP Praetorian Salamander and Commandos

Happy weekend everyone! Been a long week for me so no time for modelling or painting. However last weekend I took a few photos of few things I have been working on so I would have something to post!
So here we have a Salamander Command Tank.

It will only feature in larger games or games in which I have lots of infantry as it enables you to issue a few more orders. I need to do some converting for the crew but as yet dont really have many ideas, the only thing that came to mind was sculpting some driving goggles on whatever models are used. The tank (which has been lurking in the bitz box for the past 10 years) originally had a flamer which has since been replaced with a converted heavy weapon team heavy bolter, the ammo feed has been changed to feed into the tank.

The other WIP is the commando storm troopers.

So this is pretty much various VL bits (chem tanks, arms and weapons, heads), pith helmets and some pouches/bottles from empress miniatures and cadian bits. The work that needs doing is green stuff epaulettes (without them they will be to different from the rest of the army), facial hair (these are Praetorians after all!) and aquilla on hats or uniforms (so they really look like IG and not like historical miniatures).
Now I originally wanted these to be storm troopers but I'm starting to think differently. I look at their armour and the 4+ seems hard to justify, furthermore the weapons look far more like sniper rifles than hot shot short range las rifles (also I want to butcher some DKOK grenadiers for my storm troopers now). As such I'm thinking maybe these guys would make good ratlings (I've never been a fan of the space hobbits...), or if I get another 5 done a Vet squad with the camo cloaks and snare mines option.
Either way I'm thinking maybe a slightly different paint scheme. I'd like your thoughts on what you think they should be and how to proceed with them!

Finally the tickets for GW Badab War Campaign (26th - 27th May 2012) at warhammer world go on sale 1st Feb. I'm thinking of going. I've never been to one of these campaign weekends before, what are peoples experiences of them? Any good? Any other Praetorian players thinking of going and fancy teaming up in the doubles match?

Praetorian storm troopers and Highland Guard update

A few pictures of the work in progress storm troopers and highland guard. I'm waiting for some of the new Victoria Lamb arms for the storm troopers and there is a load of green stuff that needs to be added for epaulettes and a few other things.

The storm troopers are all wearing their forage caps and have pith helmets attached to their belts and I'm considering adding epaulettes to them when I get the arms, though I'm still not decided!
This is the second 5 men of my highland guard veterans (the other 5 all kneeling appear in previous posts). They all need cuffs, epaulettes, plumes and the odd thing here and there.

A few works in progress...

I've not had any time for painting or modelling in the past few days but I thought I'd post a few photos of things some models that I have been working on recently...

Firstly I've been updating a few tanks, mainly new insignia and some weathering/battle damage. Also a new loading platform for the medusa.

Another model I've been playing around with is a new storm trooper, where I am going for a commando style more akin to the OAP plastic stormtroopers of the 90s but with a praetorian twist. Only problem is what to do for hotshot lasguns, any ideas???

So for this guy we have Victoria Lamb torso head and chem tank, a pith helmet and water bottle from Empress Miniatures, and knife and legs from the regular plastic guard kit. I might wait for the Victoria Lamb arms and guns, they might do nicely as hotshot lasguns. Im also considering not having epaulettes on these guys.
Hopefully next post I can show some more finished miniatures as the tanks above still arent finished, there are also a few guardsmen for another squad that are almost finished.
