Finished Praetorian Storm trooper!

Despite having a dozen other things on the painting table (particularly the veterans which need to be done after a lot of delays!) the storm trooper which I converted yesterday captured my paintbrush and forced me to sit down until he was finished.

He is the first of what will be a squad of 10 (luckily for me I got 11 in the post so he is just a tester should I wish to change things!), as it is the DKOK grenadier squad there will be a flamer and a grenade launcher (which might be converted as I'd rather a hellgun...).

Any comments very welcome!

  1. Bloody hell that was quick work! He looks great! If I really had to think of things there is only two things I don't absolutely love about him. One is that I really like the life guard helmet but I'm not sure about the dark metallic colour. The other thing is I am not a fan of the cannister on his back above the battery pack and if it was possible to remove it I would. Other than that he is stunning and this is a conversion that I am sure will be getting stolen by many!

  2. I love him. I think he looks great. Do me a favor though and try one without the blue power cables. I think you'll find the red pops a bit more and doesn't compete with the blue as a spot color. It might bring a little more attention to the model and not the gun overall.

  3. Thanks for the tips guys. I think you both might be right on all counts! Firstly the canister on the back can certainly be removed (might result in a cut finger or two...), but then I worry about the power supply looking a bit funny with nothing up top. So two options here, add something else up top (a rolled up backpack type thing) or remove the power supply.

Next the power cables, I agree the blue draws the eye a bit. What coulour do you suggest? Black or white? Or remove the cables all together (fits with removing the power supply), but is it really a hellgun then...

For the Lifeguard-esq crest, what colour would work better? At the moment it is matching the shin guards and body armour, I would be reluctant to add another colour.

  4. I say leave the cables, they make a nice touch in terms of modeling.
I vote for a simple black with maybe a subtle grey highlight if need be.

  5. The trench coat colour works a treat and i like the backpack power cable combo but agree the blue doesn't work for me.

  6. Definitely keep the cables! I actually quite like the blue but that seems to be against the consensus so if not blue, red or black would get my vote. Be tempted to see if you could sculpt what's already on his back into some sort of pack, maybe with a rolled up item on top like you suggested. As for the plume, red and black is traditional colours, if not, maybe a shinier metal, the life guards are as spit and polish as it gets after all, on all the metal bits. Or both of those and make the pith metal, that's what I would be tempted to do. Would make him more life guards like, but maybe not Praetorian enough?

  7. Making the whole helmet metal is defintely a step too far! I'd consider it if they had different helemts. I also really want to keep it Praetorian, as I've mentioned before it is first and foremost an imperial guard army rather than historical minis.
For the crest what if I added a coloured plume to the top i.e. the fluffy bit that will sit on the metal base.
For the next one I shall start with a black power cable and see where we go from there.
I agree with the spit and polish point, he isn't quite as polished as other praetorians. The problem is the armou isn't fancy enough for that kind of look. The DKOK armour is pretty battered, also a bright colour might not agree with the light uniform colour... Hmmm food for thought!

  8. Absolutely awesome! I love how the build turned out, definitely keep the cable - the hellgun really ought to have a backpack power source. I'd think black cables with a mild grey highlight would be the way to go. Keep up the great work!

  9. Looks an awesome job, I agree with keeping the power cables and making them black. I'm not too sure about the helmet ridge, I dont think the metal look works with the Pith Helmet particularly - it just looks kind of odd. Not quite sure what to suggest on the face of it.
